Mossel Bay Whale Route

Whale-watching season is approximately from July until October. The Southern Right Whales migrate from Antarctica back to Southern Africa in the winter months around July and August. You might however also be lucky enough to see the Brydes Whales and Humpback Whales. There have also been frequent spottings of the Orca, known as the Killer Whale. The best whale watching season on the Garden Route is the spring months of September and October.

There are only two boats in Mossel Bay with permits that will take you close enough to the whales to capture that once-in-a-lifetime shot: Romonza Boat Trips and Mossel Bay Boat Adventures.

Besides the incredible boat excursions, there are several ICONIC spots where you can catch a sighting of the majestic Southern Right whales. See them – if luck is on your side – from one of the many elevated spots along our coastline. The Mossel Bay, Dana Bay, Klein Brak and Great Brak coastline are favoured by these gracious animals for mating, calving and rearing their young. Concentrations are especially common from Hartenbos River eastwards to Glentana with the largest concentration in front of Little Brak River to Tergniet. Whales are also visible in groups just off Kleinbrak River to Tergniet close to shore from mid-July -mid-October 24/7 and audible at night.
