Discover a hidden gem on the world-famous Garden Route – the scenic Fragrance Route, a circular drive of 40 km measured from the N2 at Great Brak River. Halfway between Mossel Bay and George, it is a favourite amongst cyclists and the perfect back roads experience for tourists in the area.
Along the way you will spot numerous murals on walls and buildings, created by well-known Friemersheim artist Fourie Ackermann. Most of them can be seen along the main road of former mission station Friemersheim – especially when driving back from Bellevue Restaurant @ The Village Lodge.
When in Friemersheim, pop in at the Shweshwe Stop where you can watch local women at work at Cinty’s sewing business, busy with projects for local businesses. Here you can also learn more about the history of the Volkwyn Chair and view a replica. Across the road is Hester’s colourful garden and lavender nursery, where two Fourie Ackermann murals can be admired.
Due to Covid the original Shweshwe Stop work creation project has been stopped, but shweshwe items made before Lockdown in 2020 are still for sale Monday-Friday until lunch, week-ends by appointment. Cash only. Phone Cinty @ 073 455 7346 to confirm hours on the day. Only chic and distinctive Three Cats shweshwe (100% cotton with vibrant colours) was used to create a range of kitchenware, gifts, buttons, toys, bags and the PROEbag, a non-electric slow cooker.
Watch a 10 minute slideshow on the fascinating history of shweshwe at the Great Brak Museum – contact 044 620 3338 for more information regarding hours and entrance fee..
The Fragrance Route is also home to a coffee roastery, the Kobus Halliday Car Museum (), an export protea farm and more. Close to the N2 you will pass La Chocolaterie Rococco, a perfect first or last stop with tastings and pairings by appointment. Detailed information and maps on www.proemb.co.za.
